Summer, what a fun season, a long vacation, going to the beach, loads of exciting food. We all love this time. But not everything is quite fun about summers, as there are some recurring plumbing issues.
The summer season has its own set of plumbing issues that hide away from your sight before you need to call a plumber to get a look. Now, you must be thinking, what can they be and how to resolve them? Don’t worry.
Here we have listed six common plumbing issues that arise during the summer and how you can make sure they are taken care of:
1. Clogged Disposal
Summer time means block parties, kids running around asking for food, family gathering, backyard parties, so much happens so fast and a lot of the food waste goes into the food disposer.
Food disposer is supposed to shred unwanted food and flush it away but when it’s overloaded or corn husk, fruits and vegetable remaining, greasy substance are thrown into it, it becomes difficult for it to grind it out and sometimes it damages the blades. Also, the grease sticks to the side and holds off some food particles leading to clogs.
To avoid these clogs, simply, run down cold water through your disposer before and after the disposal for a few seconds and make sure to avoid adding grease.
2. Washing Machine Maintenance
The summer season adds a lot of clothes to your laundry bag. As a result, you tend to add a lot of clothes to the machine at once. Now, here two things are being affected. First, you are overloading the machine which impacts its performance, second, the overload leads to blockage and overflow.
Blockage and overflow need a plumbers’ attention and if this happens to you every summer then try and stick with small loads. Regularly check the hose for any leakage and make sure to move the machine away from the wall at times to reduce overheating.
3. Basement Flooding
Summer rain is more common than it seems to be. Sometimes, the rain can continue for hours resulting in flooding of the basement. If your sump pump is in good condition you don’t have to worry about it but sometimes you forget to check if it is functioning. Summer rain can cause flooding in your basement so consider double checking your sump pumps to be sure they are working.
4. Sprinkler Issue
The growth of grass and other plants in your garden can affect your sprinkle. Many a time we use the sprinklers without clearing the space surrounding them, this cause damage to the sprinkler. Always be sure you keep the area near the sprinkler clean, also if you notice the sprinkler is damaged a bit, avoid using it to keep away from further damage.
When mowing your lawn, check where the sprinklers are to avoid hitting them and damaging them in the process.
5. Clogged Shower Drains
Summertime is beach time and whenever we go to the beach we bring back sand and other particles from the beach to our home.
If you directly go to the shower without first rinsing off in a public shower or at the beach, you are risking the particles getting caught in your shower drain and resulting in the formation of clogs in the drain. Make sure to check your drain and clean it more often. Also, every time you wash your hair make sure to get the hair out of the drain as they also result in the formation of clogs.
6. Outdoor Faucet Leaks
We use the faucet to wash our cars, to water the plants and sometimes just for fun. After we are done with it, we don’t always make sure the faucet is closed properly.
If you leave your faucet unattended after use, the leak can let up to 90 gallons of water flow out in a day. That’s a lot of water wasted, and the waste will cost you a fortune in your utility bills.
The solution is very simple, just close the faucet properly after use. Doesn’t take much time just a little awareness and it helps save water and money.
Wrap Up
We all at some point during the summer face these problems and as seen above, it’s not that difficult to stop this from happening. Summer season is a time for fun but being just a little aware of the way you use water and clean your drains can save you from having major plumbing issues in the future. Try to avoid these situations as much as possible.
Remember,
Close the faucet and clean the drain,
Check the sump pump cause it may rain,
No overloading the machine again,
No hair or sand inside the drain.
