Necessary materials and equipment
Before starting the wrapping process, make sure you have these materials and equipments with you:
- Plastic Wraps: use plastic wraps to wrap up the cushion and the frames to keep it together and prevent any damage.
- Moving Blankets: Use blankets to protect your couch during the moving process from damage.
- Furniture Sliders: To move the couch easily, you will need to use a furniture slider.
- Furniture Dolly: You can also use a furniture dolly to move your couch. All you have to do is lift the couch and place it on the platform with wheels and roll it through your home.
- Rope: You will need a rope to secure the position of the couch in the truck to prevent it from shifting while moving.
We also recommend having assistance while moving the couch. Never do it alone, always have a family member or a friend help you move it to avoid injury during the heavy lifting.
Guidelines for wrapping and moving the couch
1. Remove Cushions and Pillows
Start by removing the pillow on the couch along with any other decorative lying on the couch. Next, if the cushion is removable, take them off and wrap it with plastic wraps and blankets to prevent it from any damage. Pack them in separate boxes and label them.
2. Disassemble the Couch
If your couch can be disassembled and moved in pieces. You can disassemble the legs and arms from the couch and pack them separately, wrapped carefully in plastic wraps to prevent them from breaking. Keep in mind, though, that not all couches are meant to be taken apart. If yours is not designed in that way, we recommend not to force apart the parts as it can damage your couch.
3. Wrap up your Couch
If your couch is made of leather, use paper paddings and moving blankets as they will not only protect your couch but also not leave any marks or scratches on your couch. Even though plastic wraps are more cost-effective, they may ruin the finish of your couch by sweating.
For other couches, you can use plastic wraps to cover your couch and secure it with packing tape to keep it all in place.
4. Use moving equipment to move your couch
Once you are done wrapping the couch, it is time to move it to the moving truck. Make sure to be careful near doorways and narrow spaces to not cause any damage. Here are different ways to move the couch:
- You can move your couch using a furniture slider. You need to place the slider under the legs of the couch and push it through the doors. Once you have reached outside, you have to lift the couch and place it in the moving truck.
- If you are using a furniture dolly, it becomes easier to transport it. Place the couch slowly on the dolly in an upright stand and secure it with ropes to make it stay in place and slowly push it into the moving truck.
In both cases, make sure to have assistance by your side to ensure safety.
5. Secure inside the truck
Make sure to place the couch either horizontally or on its end. Avoid placing items on the couch itself as it may damage the cushions and springs. Secure the couch using straps and ropes to shift in its position during the moving process.
6. Assemble the couch
Once you are done moving the couch inside the new house, assemble it (if it was disassembled). Then clean the floor where the couch is supposed to be placed. Carefully remove the plastic/ blanket wraps and place the pillows and other decorations back on the couch.
Wrap Up
Wrapping and moving the couch is not an easy task and must be done carefully to avoid any damage. Make sure the equipment and materials used are in good condition. Do not apply plastic wraps on a leather couch. These are small things you need to keep in mind for a smooth transfer.
Follow the process above to move your couch and always have an assistant to avoid any problems or injuries.
If you are not sure you can move it by yourself because of narrow hallways or a heavy couch, do not hesitate to take professional assistance.
